Countdown to Christmas - Day 8: Eyeko Black Magic mascara

Fri-YAY at last Sparkles!
Eyeko Black Magic mascara
(M&S Beauty Advent Calendar)

I'm off out with pals for a delicious Kenyan-Indian meal tonight in North London, which will be supremely tasty and great fun as always.

My peepers shall be even more party ready than usual with a quick slick of Eyeko's Black Magic mascara. Promises include the delivery of drama and curl, with added volume and an extreme carbon black finish which will be water resistant.

That's a big list for such a little tube!

Based on the performance of the waterproof mascara included in the summer beauty box this year, I have no doubt that Eyeko have more than an even chance of delivering on all these claims - but make sure to check out the Instagram for my follow verdict!

One thing I'm not entirely sure of is the curved brush - generally I find I get on best with a straight brush, with bristles rather than silicone spikes. What's your favourite mascara - either for formula or applicator?

I'm a huge fan of the L'Oreal Volume Million original wand, so much so that I clean it off when I start a new tube of the mascara with one of those silicone wands. Another much loved is the Elizabeth Arden mascara - the brush looks like *nothing* and yet achieves everything I want in a mascara - separation, length and curl!

Christmas kisses and wishes

Hello 2016....shall we try again?!

Pre lychee martinis and champers induced NYE haze. Not a drop was
had at this point. I am no less concerned than you about the ensuing hrs...
Hi Sparkles

Bit poor in 2015, wasn't I? Ah well, sure, shizz happens and then life goes on. In fact it was very much the going on-ness of life which distracted me from all things blog related in 2015.

Enough of that. Onwards in the march to simple, achievable beauty looks for the everyday and special occasions.

I think my theme for January will be "shopping my stash" because after a rather self-indulgent Christmas season it's time for some quiet, calm and frugality in January. So watch out for some empties, favourites and fails from the top, middle and bottom of my Alex chest of drawers (thanks Ikea for enabling my hoarding tendencies!)

Pic for your delectation - in case you missed the Insta - is my NYE look this year. Deets below if you're interested, but X-Pro II filter has distorted a wee bit, this was not a product light look.

For now, huge Happy New Year hugs and massive kisses from your slightly absent but ever loving Josephine

What's in my make-up bag today?

Morning Sparkles!

I've been chilling out in Ireland this week with the family and operating on a reduced make-up selection given some rather last minute packing at Casa Josephine.

The look to the right has featured almost daily (mostly minus the double vision effect, other than on a slightly longer than anticipated evening in Dublin last week, I'm sure).

So, here's what I've been surviving on (not really a very small kit and caboodle but all fits very neatly in my little Illamasqua cosmetic bag - quite impressive effort from me there)...

What's new Wednesday - L'Oreal Infallible Matte

Greetings Chaps and chapettes

It's been a wee while since I have been blogging, with all sorts of real life fun and frolics taking up the hours and mental space (not to mention a horrid cold over the Easter weekend when I had intended to draft a few posts for April...the road to hell and all that). However at the behest of one of my favourite blondes, I am back. For how long who knows!

Anyway one of my favourite new purchases - well, I guess two if I'm being exact, is the L'Oreal Infallible Matte primer and foundation duo.

My nearest to work display only had four or five shades so I plumped for Shade 12 Natural Rose.

Following on from a few reviews I was hoping for full coverage and an all day finish.

Sparkling 2015: FOTD Concealer - L'Oreal's True Match Crayon Correcteur

Morning Sparkles!

How's your Sunday so far? Ok, so actually this post comes out so early most of your Sundays won't actually have started thus far. That being said, if they have you may find yourself in need of a bit of an under eye pick me up!

Or indeed, if you are like me and just genetically resemble a boxer in training given the depth of the black circles under your eyes - you might want an under eye pick me up generally - to release the maximum peeper sparkling you can. I've recently picked up L'Oreal's True Match Corrector Pencil (here) in shades #10 and #20.

Happy New Year!! Welcome to 2015!!

Good morning Sparkles!

I hope you're not feeling too jaded this morning after the NYE exuberance. I always love watching the fireworks - and let's face it any excuse to cover myself in as much glitter as possible. Not that I require it to be New Year to do that!

I got inspired by drag queens (particularly Bianca del Rio) and the swinging sixties this year with my makeup:

Christmas Eve Ombré Lip of the Day (LOTD) - Red

Morning Christmas Sparkles!!

First of all sorry for the failure on blogmas. Despite my personal determination between illness and work I just didn't get there for the missing ten posts. I'm planning a little post Christmas fun to try to make up for it though.

In the meantime...

My first ombré lip!

This is done by lining and covering my lip in a red liner from Barry M. I then filled in with Blake's Red from L'Oreal and shaded the edges with Black Dahlia colour pencil from OCC.

I feel a little glammed up and a lot ready for Christmas! Now, to flick on Mr Buble's Holly Jolly Christmas and the scene is complete!!

What's your Christmas Eve beauty look?

Til next time kitty kats - love, hugs and gradient shaded kisses

Blogmas 2014: #11 L'Oreal Color Riche Collection Exclusive Pure Reds (Blake)

Happy Christmas Party day readers!

Ok, so it might not be the Christmas party for all of you, but tonight I shall be cruising the Thames with my fellow bean counters - imbibing more wine than is healthy, talking more loudly than should be permitted and (I sincerely hope) seeing some cheesy dancing to hits such as Wham's Last Christmas.

Getting me through all of this, with a Christmas themed smile on my face shall be one of the latest offerings from L'Oreal in the form of Blake Lively's contribution to the Pure Reds collection.

Blogmas 2014: #8 Quick and dirty removal

One third of the way through the season…
My preferred options (other than the No7 wipes)
because I think the wipes for more "mature" skin are
more sensitive skin friendly. Could just be me.

I don't know about you guys and girls but sometimes I can be LAY-ZEE when it comes to removing my make-up at night. Especially when your'e working longer hours, socialising more often and crashing for 6 hours a night, rather than the preferred 10.

I'm sorry mothers of the readership - please don't hate me for my childfree person sleep preferences. I'm sure I'll pay for it somehow, someday.

In any case, sometimes (mostly) I'm not going to start with the cream cleanser and hot cloth, no doubt a contributing factor to my increasing skin flakiness and dullness. Enter - cleansing wipes.

(*Audible gasp from stage left*) Ahem, and I continue…

Blogmas 2014: #5 White eyeliner (something different)

Wakey, wakey rise and shine!

Obviously, as with Mr Bing Crosby we're all dreaming of a white Christmas here in the UK. In reality it might actually involve some damp, drizzle and perhaps some wind. So if Mother Nature won't oblige, perhaps Illamasqua can help us out.

DSLR with flash, artificial light.
I bought Precision Ink in Scribe a little while ago but haven't actually use it for much other than filling in the "gap" on a double wing look with black mascara.  It seemed like this time of year might then be appropriate to try something a little new and specifically white!

FOTD: Black glitter liner

Complete look - with and without
filter on Instagram
Morning guys and gals

Today's look is brought to you thanks to my looking forward to seeing the latest Hunger Games film since Katniss came from District 12 - coal mining (not to mention an obsession with all things glitter in the run up to the party season…or any time of year really). I like the larger glitter flakes and the way they give a bit of a more subtle glitter look.

I think even for those of you who don't like to wear a ton of make up this look should be easy to adapt to the level you are comfortable with. I've included a step by step below…any all the glitter products are very affordable (plus should be accessible on the High Street).

Eyeliners - blackest blacks and fun colours

Hola chicas y chicos

How are you doing on this fine and dandy Wednesday? Hopefully you're on a quick coast to the weekend now you've broken the back of the week.

So I've been building up to The Eye posts for a while now…my name is Josephine and I'm a Liner-holic. I've been on a 16 year + quest to find the blackest blacks, the truest colours in eyeliner pencils. Hopefully in a medium that doesn't actually drag half of my eyelid to my ear to show some colour…

Day to Night make-up…(almost) all drugstore

Hi Girls and Guys,

There have been a few requests for day to night make-up (and indeed for more natural make up looks generally) so hopefully I can use this post to kill two birds with one stone…metaphorically speaking, of course.

The photos here are with no filter, but a few were taken in more direct sunlight (top left below for the natural look) and on the second camera on my iPhone. I was struggling to show the colours properly as they were quite pale.
Day to night and the Iconic 3 palette from Cosmetic
Revolution - available online & at Superdrug for now.

In my make-up bag: Day to Night make-up

Greetings beauty addicts,

For any girl with weeknight plans it can be a challenge to go from desk to dance floor without carrying a suitcase of products around all day, so here are a few key items I regularly use.

For daytime I like to use a foundation with decent coverage in a tone which matches my skin. I've got bad under eye circles so I also use a peachy toned concealer (Illamasqua Skin Base Lift - Light 1) and set with a light dusting of powder. A duo fibre brush gives a more natural finish.

Talon Tips #1 - Nail of the Week

Happy Mani-day beauty addicts and evil queens!

Well, slightly late but I hope you'll forgive the irresistible pun - and to be fair I painted my nails on Monday evening so I think it's a valid use.

Normally in the summer I like to experiment a little with brighter shades and alternatives to the classics, but I've been craving a postbox red recently - up steps L'Oreal's Color Riche nail polish - shade 401. It also felt like a fitting start to my first Evil Queen nail of the week post.

Smokey Eye Looks: Colourful version

Greetings Guys and Gals,

So I started the smokey eye series back in February when I first started on the blog and actually never quite finished before disappearing into my rather dull day job for a few months. Now I've re-surfaced and joined the blogging world again I thought I'd finish the original eyeshadow series.

For my skin I applied Illamasqua Cream foundation (#133) on my cheeks, centre forehead, chin, upper jaw and centre of my nose. I then used MUA Cosmetics concealer on my temples, under my cheek bones, edges of my chin, lower jaw and sides of my nose. I set that all with translucent powder and went to work on the eyes.

Product review: L'Oreal Color Riche Quad (Nude Lingerie)

Holla, Beauty Addicts!!

Hope your Hump-day is going gloriously and you're able to see more sunshine than I can manage out the back end of our lovely building. Even if you can't, my latest High Street find will give you eyelids that glimmer and glisten as if you're sunbathing in St Tropez.
L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Quad Eyeshadow
E2 Nude Lingerie

I picked this little beauty up in an emergency on the weekend (I had forgotten to bring my make-up bag on an overnight with me...unheard of!) So had to make an emergency pit-stop at Boots, Euston Station for some eye products. I'd got a bunch of skin stuff knocking around my handbag...I can feel any admiration for my make-up organising skills draining fast.

Getting started series #10 lips, lips, lips!

Hallo, there my beauties!

The final instalment in our Valiant Quest of the Make-up Bag. I'm at once sad and also a bit relieved that we can move on to other topics - and also that I've actually finished a series I've started on the blog!

Getting started series #8 Bronzer

This is where I realise I should have held back on my "Aloha", so Aloha again beauty addicts and explorers…

Since it's summer time, let's get our tan on. But safely - and all being well, without streaking non-tinted lotions across our face and body. I guess to start off here one lesson it's important to acknowledge is that make-up can be applied "off-face" to great effect.

I had no idea quite how lopsided my face was! Anyhoo, hopefully
you can see from the "end" photo above how the left side (as
you look at it) looks more defined - particularly the nose and chin.
Bronzer is a key tool for all girls - I include pale and pasty varieties such as myself - in that it can make you look alive, blend in your foundation - handy for photos and not looking like a bad drag queen in real life where you (I) elect to cover a WHITE face with some actual skin coloured foundation - and just generally make you look healthier. On dark skin tones it can add a warmth that may otherwise be lacking in the bleak midwinter / pre-sunshine.

A non-orangey bronzer can also be used to do slight Kardashian-style contouring which has become quite the trend, but if you had shimmer in it there's a danger you'd edge towards C3-PO territory in direct sunlight.

However, things to avoid (in my mind) when looking for a bronzer are 1) orangeness, 2) excessive shimmer and 3) a heavy hand.  If I want shimmer I still tend to use a matte bronzer to add colour and separately use a highlighter to add shimmer where I want it.

There are several formulations you can use;

- Powder - I like a powder bronzer but I use it on a powdered base (to avoid blotches as the liquid catches the colour). Bourjois have some good versions - not too orange and their chocolate bar version is matte - while for higher end I like Smashbox's Halo Bronzer. L'Oreal do Glam Bronze - I got the shimmery version free at Christmas but there are matte versions too and their colours come in several shades which is good for High Street.

- Cream - I've just bought the expensive (but seriously, seriously HUGE) Chanel Tan de Soleil which I really like, however Bourjois have a similar product for £10. It actually works out to be about the same price gram for gram but a £10 hit is easier to take in one go. I've not tried the Bourjois one, but they are reportedly made by the same factory so it might be worth an investigate.
This is swatched *very* heavily, it blends
out to a lovely, natural tan colour - I used
it in the pictorial on placement, above.

- Liquid - the Chanel cream has a highlighter / liquid sister, as does the Bourjois base - I plumped for the Bourjois one on this (it says it's a cream on the bottle but from the texture you can see it's very liquid). If you want a liquid with a little shimmer in it there are plenty of options on the High Street - matte is the more challenging version - or you can try the AU Skin Base from Ilamasqua. I also use this to mix into winter foundations for summer glow effect. Pretty sure I can do the same with the Bourjois version though I've not tested it yet.

Don't be afraid to walk around Boots swatching colours to test for ornateness etc in the meantime enjoy playing with safe tanning (and good luck on the mission to not look like an Oompah-loompah - unless that's your path, in which case I'll keep my nose out!)

'Til next time gorgeous guys and gals

Getting started series #6 Mascara

Good morrow, Beauty Addicts and Explorers

Today is a day I've kind of been dreading. I think that mascara seems to be one of those things which just ends up so differently from person to person. For me, I've got almost poker straight eyelashes, but there's quite a few of them and they're long - so I'm always questing after volume and curl. I know for others it's going to be length which they're after most of all, so apologies if I'm not as complete as I should be, but please leave your HG / recommendations in the comments below and let's start the debate!!!

My favourites are:

- YSL Effet Faux Cils (courtes of a very generous Santa Friend last year!)
- Mally volumising mascara (from www.qvcuk.com)
- 2000 Calories from MaxFactor

Note: I have a personal dislike for silicone type wands, preferring huge bristled wands instead. L'Oreal do have certain versions of Volume Collagen with silicone wands - which are also oversized as with the rest of the range's applicators. I'm sorry for the incompleteness of this posting for those amongst you who are silicone wand fans, but I've never gotten along with one of them and I didn't want to include them in the fails purely on that basis.

I have tried and did not get on with:

No7 Lash Impact (red sparkly tube - right) - amazing write-ups, bought on the strength of reviews only to be underwhelmed by a wet product that didn't really seem volume focused.
Jemma Kidd mascara - again, too wet which didn't lend itself to volume boosting in the way I'm accustomed to!
L'Oreal telescopic - I think you'll pick up a theme to those I don't enjoy using!

For me, the L'Oreal Volume Collagen only marginally pips the YSL to the post because it's so much cheaper and doesn't tend to dry out so quickly - however it is harder to remove than the YSL (as in, total pain in the touckas even after Bioderma applied with a cotton bud).

If you can afford it, mascara is one of those things which I think really does perform better when you spend a little more on it but I think the list above really shows that there are some great options available on the High Street. Do bear in mind (before falling in love with a  super expensive version) that mascara should be replaced ideally every 3 months or so - but on the other hand £20 for 90 days of luscious lashes may not seem too high a price to pay ;)

Much love and lash boosting fun 'til next time kitty cats,

xx Josephine xx
